APIVEO™ LESSON NINE – Forgiving Yourself

Forgiving yourself is a critical step in leadership.  

You are not the sum of your past mistakes. You are the product of your next wise decision.

This lesson uses a fun exercise with money to teach kids that we do not lose our value even though we make mistakes. In the previous lesson, we learned about forgiveness. Forgiving others relieves the burden of past mistakes for the forgiven as well as the forgiver, thereby, allowing both individuals to move forward. Without forgiveness we would be perpetually weighed down by our mistakes and unable to reach our potential. Forgiving someone is like giving them a gift, and it often brings relief as well as joy.

 Often, the most difficult person for you to forgive is yourself. Perhaps, it is because you know exactly what you did and why you did it. There is no “leap of faith” in forgiving yourself. However, in order to be a leader, forgiveness is required just the same.

Forgiveness

One of the greatest opportunities in leadership is forgiveness.  

Forgiveness offers as much to the forgiver as it does the forgiven. In this lesson we emphasize both of these aspects of forgiveness. We begin with a focus on the burden of not forgiving and close with the leadership lesson that trust is built through true forgiveness. The Development of Self-Belief

The Development and Permanence of “The Team”  

This is one of my favorite lessons and one that your team will remember long after your season ends. In youth sports it’s critical to teach kids that as part of a team, they are playing for each other by contributing their unique talents. The Bucket Ceremony shows the players that they have created something new, special and everlasting and that they have dedicated themselves to each other when they formed a team.

A player’s value to the team is not measured in playing time or any other performance statistic. The value of a player is based solely on his or her personal commitment to his or her teammates. Therefore the player’s value is as unique and personal as his or her own fingerprint.

The influence of your deeds. How can your actions help people?

Building on the previous lesson regarding words, this lesson’s goal is to teach kids that deeds or actions have a great impact. This lesson will reinforce the idea that “actions speak louder than words,” and remind the players that when combined with positive words, our deeds show accountability and build trust.
